If you are wondering what I am cooking, wonder no more! Just managed to sculpt and test print on my resin printer my next FREE for personal use Iconic mini – the supportless Death Tyrant! Well, an undead beholder of a kind 🙂 And did I say that it is supportless?!
The idea behind this model came to me when I was looking for a beholder miniature. In fact my search got me to several death tyrants (which by the way I liked very much) so I decided to make one myself. Sculpting the undead beholder was a challenge, but more challenging was figuring out how to make all these small red orbs to hover around the body, plus all to be supportless. And to tell you the truth, it took me quite a time to make it happen! So without further ado – meet my interpretation of a supportless death tyrant mini!

This 3D printable Iconic miniature represents the undead version of the beholder. And if you have read the Dungeons and Dragons Monster Manual (and probably the Volo`s Guide to Monsters) you should quite know about this creature.
The body looks like a massive naked skull that was left after the flesh rotted away. In short bones fuelled by the power of death. In my model I tried to cover this description by making indeed a massive skull with powerful jaw and razor sharp teeth. But I wanted to have more details, so I added some spikes and edges (to underline its aberration origin) and some cracks on the bones (to stress out that this monster is quite old). And although teeth fall due to aging, here I put two strong and sharp rows of them. So you cannot imagine a toothless oldie beholder, but a vicious monster ready to eat you alive! However, due to the fact that this is a supportless miniature, I connected all the upper row with the lower row teeth, so that the printing can go from bottom to top without need of supports.

The next thing about this 3D model is the central eye. Usually when alive, the beholder will have eye with iris and the stuff, but when undead there should be a red light gleaming out of the empty eye socket. Well in my case this is an oval form that represents this mystic light. However, when painted I am sure that will look better than the rendered images.

And talking about eyes and the fact that this is an undead version of a beholder, so the eye stalks have already rotted away. And there are felt only ten spectral eyes that hover above the creature and glare in all directions. So here the challenge was to figure how to represent them. And I got two ideas.
The first one is the traditional approach – I made each spectral eye as a separate eyestalk with a twisted base to simulate the connection between the orb and the body. So if you print it with a translucent resin it will be transparent and will look cool.
The second approach is creating bones. Thinking about the fact that when alive the eyestalk was connected to the body and was movable, so this suggest that there can be some skeletal construction inside and when the beholder`s flesh rotted away – the skeleton of the eyestalk will remain. So I made 10 bone eyestalks.
So you can choose which type of eyestalk to use – the translucent one (on the left) or the bone one (on the right).

Finally the body is connected to the base via the same way as the first approach of the eyestalk – a two part twisted part which if printed with a transparent resin will create the effect of hovering Death Tyrant.

The base itself is something not very fancy, but gives the opportunity to customize it anyway you would love to see it – put some chests with gold, skulls or petrified statues and you name it.
And this concludes this post about my supportless Death Tyrant! Hope you like it and the miniature too 🙂
